Happy Hallowe’en! Canon to announce 3 lenses on October 31, 2024

{my bold}
I have also met these people so they definitely exist and tend to go on one workshop after another to fill in retirement time and spend their money. I am not sure if there is a lot or tons out there though. Most workshops are pretty small groups of shooters so would there even be hundreds out there? Divide that between Sony/Nikon/Canon and the numbers go down further. Numbering in the thousands seems ambitious.

Common sense does seem to be separate though with one guy I met with a Sony 600/4 and 2 x A1 in a yellow pelican case which is just asking for someone to walk off with it. I did suggest he put the case in a nondescript soft bag but he could probably afford to buy another set.

I thought that Africa/small planes would have limited what you could bring (size/weight) though irrespective of money...?

If you're on a big enough Cessna, it doesn't really matter how much you bring, it gets divided between everyone anyway. I've only been on a 4 seater terror ride in Uganda and Suriname. It's been Caravans otherwise.

One New York store won't give exact figures, but they claim to sell between 200-300 "big white lenses" a year, obviously depends on the year, product cycles and who the customers are. The Chinese market is insane for that stuff.

The law does not require Canon to provide free support as for warranty but to provide the same profit making support of the Canon repair service. The logic is clear: higher local prices encourages personal imports from cheaper regions. The extra profit made by Canon EU by higher EU/UK/Norwegian pricing must outway the small fraction of grey market imports otherwise they would lower prices to minimise the grey market.
Wouldn't most companies also balance decreased profits by moving to cheaper locations and cutting employees? I was thinking increasing prices indicate increased demand when the new product appears (with ethe exception of the covid price increases) isn't that Canon's highest price and they don't normally have discounts until after a couple years not counting refurbished items. Or am I wrong on this?
It's interesting for me anyway...

Just Wednesday, I was using a nondescript bag and set it down while I looked at the map on my phone. There wasn't anyone very close and I stepped back trying to figure my location out better. Suddenly I see a man with an intense and serious look on his face walking very quickly directly towards my bag. I stepped forward and grabbed it. immediately, he changed direction enough that I couldn't see his face. I am sure he would have taken it with know idea what he was going to find inside.

I do think not every theif would steal without knowing, but at the same time, you probably remember seeing someone running with a yellow pelican case and maybe don't pay attention if it's something else.

So, maybe this person you met had a nondiscript bag already stolen. Then again maybe it got dropped?

It's a different issue from regional pricing. Nikon did move production of even some high value gear from Japan to cut costs, whereas Canon still makes its top stuff in Japan. Canon knows how to maximise its profits and they are the opposite of a charity, as are Sony, Nikon etc. The grey market is niggling for them but most of their goods are sold as regular imports.

Any bag is a target, doesn't matter the size. Purses are stolen all the time... either for the purse itself or the contents. A majority of bags probably have something that plugs in. Non-chipped passports are also insanely valuable in some countries.

There are a few countries that if I have a backpack, it is attached to my person in urban areas. I won't name them, because I still love them. It's either attached to my belt or my wrist with a simple braided solution. You're taking my 6'5 225lbs frame with you... that'll be hard for most people. Someone tried to snatch my pack at an outdoor restaurant in one country, I just looked at him, apparently I have a really good "Bitch Face", but other than that, I haven't been bothered other than a home invasion in an African country :p , but I was the only person in the house with a brain in regards to securing gear. They stole the fridge!

The attached image also shows a heist of our snacks because I left the car door open......

Unless it's a mugging... take the bag and anything else I have. I have a friend that was held up at gunpoint in one of the countries and all his gear was taken.

Lucky they don't weigh us 6+footers as well as our gear.

That fact made me realize that weight isn't actually the issue for luggage on airplanes. When I still had to travel to the UK each month, Easyjet had a "If you can lift it unaided, you can bring it" policy, which made a lot more sense to me than strict weight limits.

Age and gender discrimination amongst others.

I was weighed in Uganda..... that was a first. Uganda really is the African country with some pretty wild firsts.
You are weighed flying to Lady Elliot Island in Australia with/without hand carry. Balancing the small planes to get there (12-16 passengers). I always ask to sit in the back so I can shoot from other side but not always possible. Sitting next to the pilot is also fun.
You can bring more weight but you pay per kilo and need to advise how much/pay in advance.

Great aerials abstracts are possible over the shallow seas near T'Gari island and island shots from the air.

Not to mention that your hand carry if also weighed more often for local larger flights here than you would want them to :-(
Hence my Scott E-Vest.

Dan Zaphra has done workshops around the world but the first time his hand carry was weighed was going from New Zealand to Australia and he was way over limit... repacking his checked luggage to fit it all at check-in!

Personally, I’m not tempted by any of the Canon lenses but it’s time for a Mac upgrade so I’ll be getting an M4 MacBook Pro.
I just recently upgraded to a Mac Studio M2 Pro and it flies compared to my late 2013 intel i7 27" iMac. Unfortunately i could not use the iMac for target display mode, so I picked up the Apple Studio Display.

I'd love to hear your thoughts once you give the M4 a workout.
